Job search outside Denmark

In general you are allowed a 3-month period to search for work within the European Union, if you are a european citizen. You can therefore move abroad and still receive your unemployment benefits.

4-ugers kravet

som hovedregel ikke må ikke arbejde. 1-dags arbejde er dog tilladt;
ikke må være syg i mere end sammenlagt 3 dage;

Undtagelse for 4-ugers kravet

Der kan dispenseres fra 4-ugers kravet, hvis:
du skal flytte, fordi din ægtefælle/samlever har fået arbejde i mere end 5 uger, eller skal påbegynde en uddannelse af mindst 18 måneders varighed;
din ægtefælle/samlever skal starte selvstændig virksomhed i det pågældende land;

About you job search in an EEA country

Use the opportunity to travel abroad for your job search with unemployment benefits for up to 3 months.

You have the opportunity to Danish unemployment benefit for up to 3 months while you seek work in another EEA country.

You must meet the following conditions:
You must be a national of an EEA country
You must meet the general conditions of entitlement to unemployment benefits at the time of departure
You must have residence in Denmark until the departure time of your application
You must have been enrolled jobcentre as fully unemployed for at least 4 weeks
You must seek permission before you travel.

Application / deadline
The application form (Application for certificate PD U2/E303) can be obtained at the job center and AAK. Once you have completed the application, it must approved by the job center. The earliest they can do it is 4 weeks before departure. Send the application in good time to AAK, so we can treat it before you travel.

4-week requirement
You must have been enrolled jobcentre as fully unemployed for at least 4 weeks before you travel. In the 4 weeks you should generally be available for work and entitled to unemployment benefits.

This means that during the 4-week period you:
have generally not worked. 1-day work is allowed;
have not been sick for more than a total of 3 days;
have not taken a holiday.

If you quit a job to seek work abroad, you will not be entitled to unemployment benefits in Denmark, from the moment you stop working until you go abroad. Any quarantine of self-inflicted unemployment may run earlier in the period when you get unemployment benefits abroad.

Exclusion of 4-week requirement

There can be dispenses from the 4-week requirement if:
you need to move because your spouse / partner has been working for more than 5 weeks, or shall commence a course of at least 18 months;
your spouse / partner has started her / his own business in that country;
You are a citizen of the country of your choice and you are applying for its EEA benefits. However, you must be registered with the job center in Denmark for at least 1 week prior to your departure day.

To be paid subsistence allowance
AAK pay unemployment benefits to your NemKonto. You must fill in a special EEA unemployment benefit card that forms the basis for payment.
You get the same amount after tax that you would have received in Denmark.

In Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein the allowances are paid by the local job center in the country where you are looking for work.

Benefits when you get home
Again to qualify for benefits in Denmark, you must be returned and enrolled jobcentre before the certificate expires. You may not, for example spend a holiday abroad in continuation of certification period.

Banks and cards in Copenhagen

To open a bank account in Denmark you need you be a registered citizen, i.e. you need to have a CPR number and the Sundhedskort (the yellow card). Somewhat surprisingly though, if you leave Denmark to reside abroad you can still keep your danish bank account open. You just need to give your new contact data and your foreign tax number.
If you need to make international transfers, since 2012 you need to give the bank a copy of your passport.

Main banks in Copenhagen are:
Danske Bank
Nordea
Jyske Bank
Amagerbanken
Nykredit
Handelsbanken
Spar Nord

You need to get an "online banking account" if you don't want to spend a fortune and a lot of time going to the bank to do simple operations such as money transfers, bill payments, etc.

Also, you need to get two cards (at least) from the bank:
-the debit card that allows you to withdraw money from the cash machines and pay in some supermarkets and shops;
-the credit card (you'll need to prove three months of steady income)
Usually the two cards, if connected to the same bank account, share the same pin code.

The use of both debit and credit cards is very common in Denmark and people use them to pay for anything. Cash has become so rare that waiters might often give you the wrong change!
Remember, very rarely you are asked or allowed to sign a receipt when paying with a credit card.
It is more likely that you will have to use the pin code, which might be not so common for credit card users coming from abroad.

The credit card will arrive to your address with a similar letter:
