There are different unemployment funds/insurances (A-Kasse) in Denmark. You may be automatically linked to one, specifically related to your professional affiliation. You may also choose the one you prefer.
You will need an A-Kasse only when unemployed, but you will have to start paying for it at least one year in advance. You will have to subscribe also to Jobnet.dk and E-boks.dk.

New as an unemployed person - what do you do?
As a new unemployed person you will find many rules on unemployment, some sort of a jungle to discover. But when you join unemployment and search on benefits, it is a fairly simple procedure that consists of two steps.
1. Subscribe as unemployed at jobcentre
Most importantly is that you sign up as unemployed in the job center. You must register as a user on Jobnet.dk and then sign up as unemployed. You can get early benefits from the day you signed up as unemployed on job centre, so here it is important to be timely.
The deadlines you must meet to receive unemployment benefits are:
You must sign up for the job center the first available day - the first day when you do not receive a salary anymore.
You must confirm your job search on Jobnet once a week. You may receive a reminder from Jobnet, when you need to verify your job search.
You should put your resume on jobnet.dk soon as possible and no later than 3 weeks after you have signed up to the job center.
2. Fill availability statement and send attached to AAK
Only when you are registered as unemployed at the job center, AAK can begin your case. You must fill out an availability statement that we can determine your entitlement to unemployment benefits.
Fill in your unemployment form online. You will be notified during weighed on the documentation you need to send to us, such as termination, etc. You must log in with NemID Digital signature or PIN to complete the availability statement.
If you are self-employed, unfortunately you cannot use our online availability statement. Instead, go to How are you benefit as an independent.
Subscribe to e-boks
AAK sends the specifications of your payments to your e-boks account. Sign for your e-boks account and add AAK to your subscriptions. If you have not already signed up for e-boks, you can do it here.
What else should you know?
During the first 3 weeks you're available, we call you to a meeting of the AAK. Here we will include information on benefits rules and all the other things you should know so you do not risk getting caught in rules and lose your right to benefits.
But we recommend that you already spend a little time to learn the main rules of the unemployment system and also our offer to know. Not all content on AAK.dk will be relevant to you, but try clicking around. It can be a good investment to check the possibilities and pitfalls.
You can find all regulations on 'Rules'. Here you should especially read about the unemployment money and check the 'Guide to new unemployed' to get a brief introduction to the system. See also the facilities available to you as free to see how you can get the best out of your time as unemployed.
In Job we have gathered all our services and advice when it comes to getting a job. You can read about our workshops and other events that you can sign up for. See also Jobmatch where you can learn about your opportunities to be matched to a job in private or public companies.
New as unemployed - in brief
Subscribe to the job center. You can get early benefits from the day you register.
Fill the unemployment form (ledighedserklaering).
Sign up for e-boks, so you can receive specifications of your payments from AAK.
Check the contents of AAK.dk, both in terms of rules and AAK's offer.
Filling the Unemployment form - Udfyld ledighedserklaering
You will be asked about you previous working situation.

Generel vejledning
§ 86, stk. 1, og § 87, stk. 1 og 2 i lov om arbejdsløshedsforsikring m.v.
Jeg erklærer at have læst vejledningen.

General Instructions
You can use this unemployment statement if you sign up as unemployed after having worked as employee, after graduation, maternity or other extended absence. However, if you are unemployed from self-employment, please contact us. The first unemployment day is the day you want to start receiving benefits. It can not be earlier than the day you sign up at Job center.
Did you quit?
Why have you resigned?
What were the reasons for resigning?
If you choose to "Other" you can write something like:
There was no opportunity for professional growth within the company, plus the company was in dramatic recession and working conditions and opportunities were poor.
One of the conditions that you can receive unemployment benefits is that you have had 1,924 hours within the last 3 years. We can find these documents in the eIncome Registry where we can see how many hours your employer has reported to tax authorities. It is therefore not necessary to uploadpayslips.
You must disclose all teaching, you are taking. All types of tuition should be disclosed, even if teaching might takes place outside normal working hours.
Do you participate in or are you signed up for lessons?
You have to answer now a number of questions about other factors that may affect your entitlement to unemployment benefits.
-Are you a owner or a manager of yours or your spouse's own business - possibly a company - in agriculture, business or rental, or do you or your spouse run such a business?
-Do you work or have worked in a business that was operated or driven by you or your spouse, partner or immediate family?
-Do you work or have worked in a company where you or your spouse, partner or immediate family owns or has owned capital such as stocks or shares?
-Do you receive disability pension under the Social pension, partial or similar foreign services, or have you applied for it.
I solemnly swear that the information I give is correct, according to § 86 paragraph. 1 and § 87 paragraph. 1 and 2 of the Unemployment Insurance Act, etc.
I declare having read the instructions.
Note: for safety reasons you will be automatically logged out within relatively shorttime after which it will not be possible to print or e-mail this copy.

No work no travel
If you're out of work in Denmark and you want to keep your unemployment benefits, you're basically stuck in it ... you're supposed to be looking for a job and apparently Denmark is the only place where you're allowed to look! No traveling abroad if you're jobless at home ... this seems to be the idea behind the random checks at airports (among other places) in Denmark by the Labour Directorate. In reality, this is not exactly true. You can still travel as long as you notify beforehand the Labour Directorate and get its approval. Traveling is allowed for family reasons, health issues and job searching. All reasons have to be proven by documentation.
In addition, while unemployed you still have right to holidays (!) ... having nothing to do can be very laborious after all. You'll have three weeks where you can travel without having to specify reasons. You'll still need to notify the Labour Directorate though!
If you get stopped at the airport by the Police, they will check on your labour situation and eventually let you know if they've opened an investigation about you.
This is the paper they will release to let you know what's going on:

Working in Cph
Working is probably the best feature of Denmark.
It should become the main selling point for a country that has no rich culinary tradition, no cozy weather nor astonishing sites to visit. While all of the characteristics above are below the average of most european countries, working conditions are probably the best among most countries in the world.
Danes have understood probably better than anyone else that life is much more than working.
The working week time is 37 hours, with a half-hour lunch break (29 minutes to be precise!), this means that effective worktime is only 34 and a half hours per week. People get to work by 9:00 and get out by 16:30, a half hour earlier on fridays. If we compare that to other countries where the working hours per week are 40, excluding lunchtime which is usually an hour, we can clearly see that a dane at work spends per week 10 and a half hours less than most people. This adds up to 42 hours less in a month and 420 in ten months (which is roughly the working time per year if you subtract vacations and holidays). This means than in a 40 years timeframe (a lifetime) a dane works 16800 hours (almost two years!) less than a spaniard or an italian.
Unemployment is very low, notwithstanding a tempting welfare system that takes care of people without a job. Basically they all work, to all work less: what a simple and brilliant idea. How can Denmark be competitive then? The secret is efficiency, teamwork and fostering, concepts that in southern european countries and all neo-latin countries got probably lost with the defeat of the Roman Empire. Barbarians came from the north, illiterate and ugly, but they certainly knew how to organize an army, fight a battle and reproduce!
What does efficiency mean? The answer is exactly what can be found in a dictionary: the effective operation as measured by a comparison of production with cost (as in time, energy and money). They tend to work well, in an organised manner and just what's needed. This does not mean they are flawless, they're still humans and therefore far from excellence. There are plenty of improvements to make, but these are just improvements to a human system at his maximum expression of performance, which by definition it's far from perfect. Efficiency also means using employees effectively at the best of their potential, this process begins from hiring the right people, possibly more talented than the ones already in the office, on the basis of skills and CV.
What does teamwork mean? It means that there are no geniuses nor salvatores patriae, no heroes nor stars. Success does not depend nor can be attributed to any single man, as brilliant as he can be. This, besides being true, is well radicated in what I define as "modestia daniae", the sense of modesty belonging to the danish culture. People are generally treated equally, fairly and respectfully. Meritocracy exists and works.
What does fostering mean? Cultivating talents, not letting the good employees go, treating them well, keeping them happy, building teams and growing as an office, not as individuals.
Finding a job can be difficult and limited not knowing the danish language, but still possible and very much based on skills and CV. There is even a national database, Jobnet, where you can create your own profile and upload professional information.
While having a network of friends can be helpful to find a job, it is not necessary. In other countries there's really no other way, since the selection of the employees is based exclusively on whom you know. In Denmark, it is mostly based on what you can do. This eventually pays off making the danish firms more competitive and prepared over the years.
As many other things, job searching can be done over the internet in a very efficient and simplified way.
