As the Øresundsbroen (Oresund bridge) was inaugurated in 2000 Copenhagen and Malmoe have effectively become one urban region. Many people have emigrated from Copenhagen to Malmoe since the cost of living is almost half of what it is in the danish capital.
Also, many swedes have started working in Copenhagen and commuting on daily basis.
Between Copenhagen and Malmoe you can either go by car, bus or train. It doesn't matter what you choose, it is always expensive!
The main difference is time. By car or train it takes only approx. 30 minutes from the center of Malmoe to the one of Copenhagen (and trains go every twenty minutes), while by bus it takes approx. 1 hour.
If you go by car you'll have to pay at the toll station an expensive ticket according to the size of your vehicle.
The bus is the cheapest way of transportation. Line 999 costs 120 DKK for an adult roundtrip. Busses unfortunately don't run very often during the day and don't run at all at night.
Cars and busses allow you to cross the bridge on top of the bridge deck, therefore to properly see and experience the bridge, while the train passes within the bridge truss, which is not so spectacular.
The train is the preferred solution for a daily trip since you don't have to worry about timetables. The ticket price is incredibly expensive considering the short distance covered, but it serves, as for the car toll, the purpose of paying for the bridge costs.
The roundtrip fare for one adult (en voksen) is 160 DKK (if you're coming back within the same day,(kan tilbagebetales for gyldigheds-dagen) otherwise it is more expensive. You can save money by traveling together with other people, as the fare drops down to 256 DKK for two adults (to voksne) roundtrips (and even more for three or four).
Malmoe is not a very attractive place, but it has rapidly grown and improved since the bridge opening. The bridge has brought a lot of attention, people and opportunities to the city and future planning considers expanding the infrastructure as well as the city.
